A platoon of 61 marines was caught on camera performing a ‘monkey drill’ which is completely improvised.

Marine recruits have to undergo weeks of intense training during which they are required to memorize drill instructor’s commands and learn the associated formations.

In order for the platoon to function as a unified unit, all of the recruits have to memorize the movements and execute them at the perfect timing – as soon as they are commanded to do so by the instructor.

The recruits in this particular video were yet to graduate. Before they were allowed to move on with their training, they had to perform the monkey drill also known as the trick drill.

In the video, which was taken at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in South Carolina, the recruits make the routine look simple. Perfect execution of the trick drill, however, requires weeks of intense training and memorizing of the commands and movements.

While there is no way to directly practice the monkey drill due to the fact that it is improvised, recruits have to memorize the commands and pay attention to the instructor’s calls.

Despite the recruits in the video appearing to be synced to the eyes of those who aren’t experts on the matter, hundreds of people pointed out that the platoon was out of step and that their performance was sloppy.

Nevertheless, the majority of commenters applauded the Marines for their ‘near-flawless’ performance and their ability to focus even when other marines were passing by.
