A mariachi band performed outside Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s home on Sunday amid Cancun trip backlash.
The musicians – wearing charro outfits and sombreros – filled the cool air with the traditional music as they played cheerfully outside the Senator’s home.
Neighbors said they went out on the street to watch the performance, which was organized by Bryan Hlavinka of Houston, the Independent reported.
The Texan shared the video on Twitter, writing: “Just a typical Sunday. Mariachi band in town. We’re on our way to Ted Cruz’s house because he feels so bad about missing his vacation.”
As their Cancun trip backlash continued over the weekend, videos shared on social media showed the mariachi band playing Mexican songs outside Cruz’s home.
Adam Jama from Carrollton, Texas, set up a GoFundMe page for the band to play outside Cruz’s home, with proceedings going to Texas Children Hospital.
“Senator Cruz, being an amazing dad, dropped off his family in Cancun in the middle of a major crisis and came back to Texas to continue serving his constituents,” the page reads.
“We want to thank Senator Cruz for his leadership and pay for an amazing Mariachi band to perform for him. No one should go to Cancun and not listen to Mariachi.”
The video gained mixed reactions from viewers, with one writing: “Not a great idea if his kids are home, they can’t help it that their father is Ted Cruz.”
Another wrote: “If I’m honest I’m not sure how I feel about this. No doubt @SenTedCruz deserves this. However his children are his pawns and the ones he throws under the bus. Nonetheless they are blameless and should not be subjected to harassment even if it’s funny.”
A third said: “Snowflake loves mariachi music.”
