A group of friends from Canada was in Riviera Maya, Mexico, when they decided to spend one day to see some whale sharks. These magnificent creatures only visit that area of Cancun from May to September so they thought that they should take advantage of the time to go and see them.

They were staying in a resort in Playa Del Carmen and had to take the ferry from Cancun to the small island of Isla Mejores, which took 20 minutes across the Caribbean Sea. A tour guide from Serious Diving met up with them and they were soon on their way to a spot 20 miles offshore.

It wasn’t easy for the tourists to spot the whale sharks but fortunately, the captain and his crew had skilled eyes. Whale sharks can grow as large as 40 to 60 feet in length although the average adult whale shark will range from 20 to 30 feet. These massive creatures weigh up to 40,000 pounds.

They make appearances in the area because strong currents carry microorganisms to that location from great distances, bringing a variety of food to these massive creatures. But this same phenomenon also brings in other amazing creatures.

It really was awe-inspiring to watch this creature gracefully swimming in the water with little effort and just enjoying the bounty that nature provides. The waters off Cancun have a crystal-clear clarity which means one can see as far down as 100 feet and this provides an amazing view into an underwater world that most people are not aware of.
