A 19-year-old man shot two young boys dead after they asked the attacker how tall he is while buying some candies at a store in Chicago.
16-year-old Charles Riley, 17-year-old Jasean Francis, and another teen went into the convenience store when they noticed Laroy Battle’s height. The three boys said they hoped to be as tall as Battle someday.
While the boys were walking home from the store, Battle reportedly approached them and pulled the trigger.
“These individuals were with their friend. They’d just gone to a mall. They know the neighborhood. They don’t ever go out to the neighborhood because it’s so dangerous,” Deputy Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said to CBS 2.
16-year-old Riley was shot in the back and left leg while 17-year-old Francis was hit in the chest, hand and back. They were rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital where they both passed away.
Police officers recovered nine shell casings from the scene. Deenihan said, “None of it makes sense.”
Surveillance footage shows Battle limping into the store and walking toward the counter. After a few minutes, three younger boys entered the store to buy candies.
The video cuts to Battle trying to run down an alleyway where he allegedly dumped the gun in a garbage can.
Deenihan continues, “The security cameras from the area were able to show the offender discarding a gun in the garbage can and then Battle was eventually found hiding out in a motel.”
The 19-year-old was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was denied bond.
“There was nothing that would have set off Battle to be angry at these kids,” Deenihan added. “He is about 6’3”, 6’4”, and they literally just asked him how tall he was because he is extremely tall.”
