A 27-year-old man was forced to have most of his tongue removed after a seemingly harmless mouth ulcer turned out to be cancer.
Dayle Gordon was originally told that the ulcer was nothing to worry about but another diagnosis revealed that it was aggressive cancer.
But despite undergoing grueling radiotherapy and surgeries, he was told that his cancer has already spread.
He then underwent surgery to remove 50 lymph nodes and cut most of his tongue out to save his life.
After the procedure, Mr. Gordon underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatment from which he was fortunate enough to recover.
His family said that he was still having PET scans every three months to make sure that his recovery is on the right track.
However, he later developed a lump on his neck and it also had to be removed.
The huge lump had grown onto an artery leading to his brain but it was removed in February this year.
Earlier this month, doctors found a spot on his heart which meant that cancer had spread.
Mr. Gordon’s heartbroken sister, Jessica Sexton, said this news was the most difficult to handle.
“I think finding the tumour on his heart was really the one that hit him the hardest because he feels like he’s gotten over hurdles and been through two major surgeries already and then to go back and then find it’s back and spread was definitely the hardest to handle,” she expressed.
The 27-year-old was initially told that the tumor could not be operated on but he later received an open heart surgery after doctors discovered another tumor.
“Something like that size is just a huge risk because at anytime you could have heart failure and leaving the tumour there would have just been not an option,” his sister said.
For other tumors, Mr. Gordon will go through radiation therapy targeting his heart and neck.
His wife has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for their hospital expenses.
