Carly ‘Charli’ Scott and Steven Capobianco from Maui met back in 2009 and went on to live together for several years even though Steven dismissed their relationship and suggested they were nothing more than just roommates.

After breaking up, Capobianco allegedly found himself a new girlfriend but continued having a sexual relationship with Charli who eventually fell pregnant with his baby.

Despite knowing her ex-boyfriend didn’t care about her, 27-year-old Charli decided to continue her pregnancy and refused to get an abortion after Capobianco demanded she gets rid of their baby.

“I’m not thrilled about having a child. It’s not what I was planning on doing at 24,” the young man admitted in one of his early interviews with the police.

“I’m a single, 24-year-old male who has a dog and I can barely keep me and my dog. I mean like yeah, we eat pretty well, but it’s like I have a dollar in my pocket right now until my next paycheck. I don’t have any spare cash for a child.”

After Scott refused her ex-boyfriend’s request, Capobianco reportedly took her for a ride before stabbing her in the abdomen over twenty times and disposing of her body in a wooded area. He also burned her car in a presumed attempt to cover up the murder.

Once Maui authorities discovered Charli’s body, it was revealed that she had suffered a series of puncture wounds before the attacker got rid of her.

While Capobianco maintained his innocence, the prosecutors presumed him guilty of the crime from the start since all evidence pointed towards him.

According to Capobianco’s story, his ex picked him up and took him to his vehicle, which allegedly broke down, so that he could fix it. After fixing his truck, the two allegedly drove away in separate vehicles and he eventually lost sight of her.

In the 2016 trial, the defendant refused to testify. Among other evidence, the court listened to one of Capobianco’s early interviews with the authorities in which he referred to the victim in the past tense even though her body was not yet found at the time.

In December 2016, the defendant was found guilty of second-degree murder on top of second-degree arson. In the following year, he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole with mandatory-minimum prison terms amounting to 50 years.
