A man chased down a thug who stole an elderly man’s car with his granddaughter in the backseat.

Ernaldo Varela, who is a father of a 3-year-old and 2-year-old, heard people screaming when he had gone to pick his wife up from work.

“I was just driving by, I saw all these people screaming and then that’s when I pulled over and I asked them what’s going on, and that’s when everyone was screaming, saying ‘he tried to take a baby, he tried to take a baby!’” he told 12News.

25-year-old Cynthia Gracia approached a grandfather, who came to Fry’s with his 2-year-old granddaughter and asked him for money.

That’s when Cynthia’s 26-year-old boyfriend, Joe Velazquez, jumped into the car and ran away with the elderly man’s 2-year-old granddaughter who was in the backseat.

“I instantly snapped!. And you know I ran after him. When I hear he was trying to take a baby, I could not let him get away” Valera said.

When Velazquez realized he was being chased, he abandoned the car, leaving the 2-year-old in the car.

But, Valera still chased him. He said:

“He managed to pull out his knife from out of his pocket. He swung at me a couple of times, missed, finally he got my finger, and then that’s when I let go.”

Later, the man and his girlfriend both got arrested.

Both, Valera and the 2-year-old are fine. Valera said:

“I have two little girls, you know. I have a 3-year-old and a 2-year-old, and there’s no way I could let something like that fly. If I could do something about it, I’m gonna do something about it.”
