This Australian Man Is Campaigning To Get A Michelin Star For His KFC Franchise


An Australian man has been campaigning to get his KFC a Michelin star.

We all love KFC, there’s no doubt about that. But a Michelin star, really?

Sam Edelman has been associated with the fast-food giant for more than 20 years. And now the guy believes the franchise he owns stands in line with other Michelin star restaurants.

Sam says his franchise, based in Alice Springs, Australia, is ‘the most remote KFC in the world.’

He says people undertake journeys of thousands of miles just to have some fried chicken at his specific KFC branch, and he is now urging his customers to get behind him in his campaign.

Sam’s customers can do that by joining the Facebook group he has created – Kentucky Fried Chicken deserves a Michelin Star.

As of now, the Michelin Guide does not publish in Australia.

But, Sam hopes his KFC franchise would be Australia’s first restaurant to get the highest dining recognition when the guide starts publishing there.

Taking to Facebook, he wrote: “So Michelin haven’t replied to my email, it looks like that’s failed. So I jumped on Facebook and asked them, ‘What does it take for me to get a Michelin star?’

“They got back to me surprisingly quickly and they’ve told me that they’re not in Australia yet but they hope to be some day. Maybe we can be the first one…”

“We have customers here in Alice Springs that come from 500 or 1,000 kilometers away to get a couple of buckets of chicken,” the 37-year-old said at the Today show.

“We have excellent cooking so I kind of thought, ‘Why can’t we be recognized?’ And at the same time it’s a little bit cheeky as well.

“I know that my Kentucky Fried Chicken is worth a special journey which is three stars but do you know what, if I get one star I will be very happy.”

There are no specific rules in place to bag a Michelin star, however, the fine dining guide has outlined some general requirements.

Your restaurant can earn one star if it’s considered ‘a very good restaurant in its category.’ To earn two stars, it must have ‘excellent cooking, worth a detour.’

And for three stars, it must serve ‘exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.’
