While most people believe a senior care home is the best place to spend one’s golden years, a Texas man thinks otherwise.
Terry Robison, from Spring, Texas, doesn’t see himself spending his final years in a retirement house, he revealed in a Facebook post that has since gone viral.
Nor does he plan to live in a mother-in-law suite with his children.
Instead of typical options, Robison has come up with a more enjoyable as well as an economical option; the 64-year-old plans to spend his final days in a Holiday Inn.
And he has worked out all the calculations.
“With the average cost for a nursing home care around $188.00 per day,” he wrote in the Facebook post. “There is a better way when we get old and too feeble.”
Robison is not wrong about the expenses of senior care homes, which averages to around $150 per day, the Frederick News-Post reported.
“I’ve already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn,” he continued. “For a combined long term stay discount and senior discount, it’s $59.23 per night.
“Breakfast is included, and some have happy hours in the afternoon. That leaves $128.77 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies.”
Robison then provided a list of advantages one might get by staying in a Holiday Inn rather than a nursing home.
“They provide a spa, swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc,” he wrote.
“Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap. $5 worth of tips a day and you’ll have the entire staff scrambling to help you.”
He said the staff at the hotel will “treat you like a customer, not a patient.” So, they will always be there to help him with anything he needs.
“TV broken? Light bulbs need changing? Need a mattress replaced? No problem. They fix everything, and apologize for the inconvenience,” he continued.
Robison also argued how a Holiday Inn is safer than a nursing home and how they make sure to take care of one’s health.
“The Inn has a night security person and daily room service. The maid checks to see if you are okay. If not, they’ll call an ambulance. Or the undertaker,” he wrote.
“If you fall and break a hip, Medicare will pay for the hip, and Holiday Inn will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.”
He also said that his family would be more likely to visit him in a Holiday Inn as compared to a care home.
“And no worries about visits from the family. They will always be glad to find you, and probably check in for a few days for a mini-vacation. The grand-kids can use the pool.”
The biggest advantage, however, is that one doesn’t need to confine oneself to a single property as it is very easy to move between hotels.
“You’re not stuck in one place forever,” he wrote. “You can move from Inn to Inn or even from city to city. Want to see Hawaii? They have a Holiday Inn there, too.”
After Robison’s post went viral, InterContinental Hotels Group, who owns Holiday Inn, added one more advantage of living with them.
A spokesperson for IHG told Liftable: “While we’re not certain how Mr. Robison arrived at his current budget calculations, we look forward to welcoming him when he reaches his ‘golden age.’
“He did miss one big benefit in his long list of reasons to stay with us – kids eat free at Holiday Inn. So that’s another excuse for grandkids to come and visit.”
