Days before Jacob Abraham took his own life, he had taken his driving theory test, run a half-marathon, and visited a doctor about a mole on his shoulder.

Those were the actions of a person who took good care of himself. But one Saturday afternoon, the 24-year-old decided to take his own life at his home in Cardiff.

His devastated parents, David and Nicola, and brother Dominic believe that the incident could’ve been avoided.

“He often worked seven days a week – he loved it,” Nicola shared. “He went to the gym every day and he ate well – he’d buy and cook his own food and he kept food diaries.

“He even bought tablets for his hair to grow thicker. This was someone who was very invested in himself and his future.”

A casual cocaine user, Jacob committed suicide after a night out.

His heartbroken Nicola said, “I believe one hundred percent that if Jacob hadn’t taken cocaine, he would be alive today.

“Jacob was a laidback boy who didn’t suffer from anxiety, but even though he only took cocaine from time to time it mangled his brain.

“The lows were so crippling that he struggled to cope and on this occasion he took the only way out he could see.”

The young man’s story shows that even the most casual use of coke or cocaine can have heartbreaking consequences. Nicola now wants to raise awareness of the impact the drug can have on mental health.

“You never think suicide is going to happen to you – but if this could happen to Jacob then it can happen to anybody,” she expressed. “It was a wake-up call.”

20 percent of 16 to 24-year-olds admit that they are using cocaine in the past year. It is a worry as the drug has been linked to depression, paranoia, and suicidal thoughts.

Both Love Island’s Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis had alcohol and cocaine in their systems when they committed suicide.
