A man who had been released on bail has been jailed after spitting blood at a female police officer who attempted to arrest him.
41-year-old Temisan Oritsejafor from Wyken in Coventry, England, has been jailed for eight months following an assault on the female cop who was called to his flat after the man allegedly assaulted his neighbor.
According to the reports, the brawl with the neighbor left Oritsejafor with a bleeding nose whereas the man, who was on bail over a previous assault, spat blood at the officer who arrived at his flat.
“A male officer who believed he was being aggressive took him to the floor, and was assisted by a female colleague, PC Napier, to restrain him,” Prosecutor Mark Phillips said.
“As they’re getting him up, he spits into the officer’s face. That is spit and blood, because he had had a bleeding nose earlier, and it catches her straight in the eye.”
As seen in the screenshots from the Napier’s bodycam footage, Oritsejafor turned towards her and spat at her after he was already handcuffed.
After the cop’s partner placed the man in a chokehold, Napier was “clearly upset” and “very shaken” according to the prosecutor.
Following the incident, Napier spoke out about the risks that frontline officers are facing, especially now in the times of pandemic.
“As frontline officers, we know that we put ourselves in potential danger, but we now face the added risk of Covid-19 infection which then also puts our families at risk,” she said.
“It’s a shock when someone spits in your face and very unpleasant, so I’m pleased the force and the courts take these assaults so seriously.”
Following the incident, Napier was tested for COVID-19 and the results came back as negative.
