A man was sentenced to over six months in prison after breaching lockdown orders by sneaking out of the hotel where he had been undergoing a mandatory 14-day quarantine.
According to the local reports, 35-year-old Jonathan David from Australia “selfishly” broke his quarantine in order to see his girlfriend.
After refusing to comply with 14-day mandatory quarantine upon his return from Victoria to Perth, Western Australia, David was caught by the police and charged with failing to comply with a direction.
As the media reported, the man sneaked out of the hotel repeatedly and resorted to the use of public transport to pay a visit to his girlfriend.
According to The West Australian, David was fined $2,000 and ordered to serve one month of his sentence immediately whereas the rest of it was suspended provided he doesn’t commit another offense in the following 12 months.
“You chose to roll the dice with other people’s lives and that was breathtakingly arrogant,” Magistrate Elaine Campione said of David’s actions.
“We must protect the community from those who do not care.”
According to The West Australian, the man was initially allowed to self-isolate with his girlfriend but was moved to a hotel after their plans fell apart.
As the police confirmed, David managed to escape the hotel security by exiting through the fire door. According to the staff, he was seen outside his room on five occasions.
