A man shared his Powerball winnings with an old friend after agreeing to split jackpot earnings with him nearly three decades ago.
Thomas Cook from Wisconsin may have won the $22 million Powerball jackpot but he has not forgotten about the deal he made with his old friend, Tom Feeney, back in 1992.
According to the reports, Cook and Feeney made a handshake as they agreed to split the winnings should either of them ever win the jackpot.
While nearly three decades had passed since they shook hands to seal their agreement, Cook surprised Feeney as he one day called him to explain he had won $22 million and was ready to split the winnings as agreed.
“It was quite an experience when I read those first two or three numbers,” Cook said as he recalled checking his winning ticket while enjoying breakfast with his wife.
“I kind of froze and handed them to her and she froze.”
Following the fortunate turn of events, Cook quit his work and immediately thought of his old friend and the agreement they sealed with a handshake back in 1992.
“A handshake’s a handshake,” he insisted.
After informing Feeney about his winnings, the friends collected the reward at the Wisconsin Lottery together with their wives.
Speaking of his plans for the future, Cook admitted they’re looking forward to a comfortable retirement.
“We can pursue what we feel comfortable with. I can’t think of a better way to retire,” he said.
