A 21-year-old man faces federal charges after he hid into a 12-year-old girl’s bedroom and sexually assaulted her for a month after they met online.
Prosecutors said that Zacharias Cavasos, who is facing a charge of sexual abuse of a minor, made contact with the girl in December 2019, exchanging messages with her on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat.
It was in early February when the 21-year-old traveled to Oregon from Washington and secretly moved into the girl’s room by hiding in a cavity under her bed, said Assistant US Attorney Jennifer Martin, according to OregonLive.com.
Cavasos sometimes hid in the victim’s closet.
On February 25, the girl’s grandfather first saw the stranger in the house and ordered him to get out of their property. However, he sneaked back into the child’s bedroom and stayed hidden until March 11, when he was discovered again and arrested.
Cavasos admitted to hiding in the girl’s bedroom and repeatedly having sex with her despite knowing he was only 12.
Police also searched his phone and discovered disturbing videos showing him and his victim.
But a judge agreed to release the assailant to a sober living facility where he will stay under GPS monitoring and a curfew until the trial.
Cavasos is not allowed to make any contact with the girl or travel to the area where she lives. His computer and phone activities will also be subjected to investigations.
Atty. Martin argued to keep him in prison and told the judge that the 21-year-old has no job and no family in the area. She also pointed out the fact that the came back to the girl’s room even after her grandfather ordered him to leave.
But Cavasos’s defense lawyer said that his client is emotionally immature and may have an intellectual disability. He also mentioned that the 21-year-old had no history of violence or prior criminal record.
