A Chinese man who had a heart attack passed away as bystanders refused to help him over fears he had coronavirus, which took the lives of at least 200 people.
The man, 60 years old, passed away from a cardiac arrest outside a restaurant in Sydney. Emergency services arrived and attempted to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Daily Telegraph, restaurant managers said staff informed them that a man had collapsed outside.
However, bystanders refused to help over fears the Chinese man had the killer virus.
Coronavirus has infected thousands of people around the world and took the lives of at least 200 people. It spread from Wuhan, China, where over 11 million people are in lockdown.
New South Wales chief medical officer Kerry Chant urged recent Hubei visitors to come forward.
She said: “We want to get the message out that people with low-level symptoms need to come forward. We want to detect those cases and it will help us to better understand the disease.”
Dr. Chant confirmed 16 possible cases of the killer virus were being investigated in New South Wales. Two people confirmed to have coronavirus have improved and could soon be released from isolation.
Health Minister Greg Hunt said: “We’ll be supporting the public and GPs through the allocation of up to 1 million masks for general practices.”
He also added that the outbreak had the potential of becoming a ‘pandemic’ in Australia, where 7 cases have been confirmed and more are anticipated to emerge.
He advised anyone who visited Hubei province in China to isolate themselves for two weeks after the visit.
