A 33-year-old man from Virginia took the life of his girlfriend after he was released from prison over coronavirus concerns.
Ibrahim E. Bouaichi, who had been jailed after Karla Dominguez accused him of raping her, shot the victim outside her apartment.
The Venezuelan native was found lifeless at around 6:20 am with multiple gunshot wounds.
It was in October when Bouaichi was sent to prison after Dominguez accused him of rape. However, he was freed on bail in April over coronavirus concerns.
But only a few months later, the 33-year-old shot down his accuser.
Authorities issued a news release asking for people’s help to locate Bouaichi, calling the attacker ‘armed and dangerous,’ according to the Washington Post.
Police and federal marshals then found him two days later in Prince George’s County with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Bouaichi, who has a murder charge, was listed as being in grave condition. He was indicted on abduction, strangulation and rape charges after Dominguez testified that he raped her last October.
His lawyers claimed that the two were in a relationship and were about to use that in their defense.
But when coronavirus pandemic hit, the lawyer argued that the disease was a danger to their client as he awaited trial.
His lawyers, Manuel Leiva and Frank Salvato, argued that “social distancing and proper disinfecting measures are impossible while incarcerated… Simply put, the risk of contracting Covid-19 in a jail is exceedingly obvious.”
On the condition Bouaichi only leave his Maryland home to meet with pretrials services officials or lawyers, Circuit Court Judge Nolan Dawkins released the 33-year-old on $25,000 bail.
Speaking about the killing, Bouaichi’s lawyers said they were ‘certainly saddened by the tragedy both families have suffered here,’ adding they ‘were looking forward to trial. Unfortunately, the pandemic continued the trial date by several months and we didn’t get the chance to put forth our case.’
