As the inquest heard, the young man, who ran his own gym, previously requested testosterone treatment from his doctor. After the dad’s request was turned down, he resorted to purchasing illegal steroids over the internet in an attempt to further enhance his body.

According to the reports, Mr Darne became a personal trainer though he was suffering from low self-esteem. As his mother, Barbara Darne, added, she rushed her son to the hospital after he started struggling to breathe.

“Lex was complaining of difficulties breathing for some time before I drove him to the hospital. He was annoyed with me saying that I was causing him more stress but he was just lashing out,” she said.

“He knew he had to go, he was feeling poorly and his heart was racing. However, he was afraid of going in on his own. He wanted me to go with him, he did not want to go into the Covid-19 ward alone. I last saw him at 8pm, I told him I loved him.”

As the young man’s doctor, Dr Roselle Herring, explained, Darne told her that he and his family came from South Africa. He also told her that “he was unable to get medication in the UK and so purchased medication over the internet.”

“He was self-administering and injecting testosterone and he had started taking his sister’s medication for anxiety,” Dr Herring said.

Unfortunately, the 27-year-old suffered cardiac arrhythmia, whereas the doctors were unable to resuscitate him. He was declared dead on June 29 last year.

Following the young man’s death, an investigation revealed that Darne was hiding several illegal body-enhancing drugs, as well as needles and syringes, at his home.

As Dr Simon de Lusignan, Darne’s GP, confirmed after the tragic passing, the 27-year-old asked him for testosterone treatment just months before his death.

“The last contact we had with Lex was on March 2, he was concerned about his low mood. He wished to have treatment for regular testosterone as in South Africa he was having his testosterone levels checked,” he said.
