A family man received a series of worrying threats after asking a café if they sell natural cow’s milk.
The dispute started after 54-year-old Gareth Wyn Jones, a celebrity farmer from Wales, UK, shared a post in which he inquired why a vegan café known as Caffi Clywedog wasn’t selling natural, local milk.
In his post, the farmer shared a link to the café’s website and a picture of the menu which, in part, reads: “All our milks are plant-based. We recommend oat milk for coffee, rice milk for tea, soya milk for chocolate.”
After asking the simple question on Facebook, the father-of-three, who appeared in BBC’s The Family Farm, got bombarded with vile comments and death threats.point 254 |
According to the reports, vegan activists accused him of being a murderer and threatened to end his bloodline.point 93 | Some also suggested people like him were the reason why we have a pandemic.point 155 | 1
“These are the type of people who kill your animals and set your barns on fire,” Mr Jones said after reporting the vile messages to the police.
“They are not to be messed around with. The messages didn’t bother me too much but my wife was very worried and upset last night.”
Following the farmer’s complaint, the vegan café in question became a subject of threats as well despite not participating in the conversation about milk initiated by Gareth.
“We would firstly like to thank the public who have supported us and sent kind messages, after we received a torrent of negativity which included online threats for offering a plant-based menu,” the owners of the café said after allegedly receiving arson threats.
“Although we respect that people can all have different views, what we cannot accept are threats of violence and arson to our premises, and messages of hatred that have been sent to Caffi Clywedog, which has been promoting well-being within our community at the heart of everything we do.
“We are committed to our work at Clywedog to promote positive well-being, and will continue to serve members of the public, as well as helping the vulnerable in our community.”
As Gareth added, he is opened to having a conversation about the matter as long as people don’t get judgmental. He also suggested that vegan activists who targeted him have gone too far when they started threatening his family over an honest question.
