A 22-year-old man fainted while receiving punishment for pre-marital sex.
He was revived to take the rest of the punishment before being taken to a hospital.
Public flogging is a common punishment for numerous offenses banned under the local Islamic law in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh region. Other offenses include drinking alcohol and gambling.
Aceh is the only region in the country that implements the law.
The Indonesian man was sentenced to 100 strokes and begged a Sharia officer to discontinue whipping his back before he lost consciousness.
He was then revived and the whipping continued before he was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
According to reports, a woman who received punishment in a different case also fainted.
Usman Hamid, director of Amensty International Indonesia, said: “The fact that two people were beaten unconscious today, in two separate incidents, is a damning indictment of the authorities who let this happen on their watch.”
He also said that the “cruel, inhuman and degrading” punishments called on authorities in the country to stop them.
Around 500 people watched the whipping, many recording on their phones while others shouted ‘harder, harder.’
The 22-year-old had been found guilty of having sex with a woman who was also sentenced to 200 lashes.
“This is the consequence they have to face for violating the law,” watcher Muhammad Yunus expressed.
One internet user commented: “Im so glad that I live in the UK. I can see why so many people want to move here! This is like stepping back 200 years, very strange to see in this day and age. What a sadistic thing to do! Vile nation.”
Another wrote: “This is the region that millions in aid was donated to after the 2004 tsunami . Clearly the money didn’t get them out of the dark ages .”
A third said: “This is barbaric. But if we had this practice in the US for pedophiles and rapists, I bet those numbers would decrease overnight. Four walls and three square meals a day is too good for those monsters.”
