It is often a surprising feat at what one can accomplish with the most ordinary of equipment available to them.
Philip Rogich from Ogden, Utah, is making other people’s trash and turning them into shelters for stray and feral cats.
There’s a long, cold winter ahead of us and cats without homes are going to bear the brunt of it.
That’s why Philip decided to transform discarded coolers that would have ended up collecting dust and occupying space at a landfill somewhere, into warm and dry shelters so that these stray felines can manage through the next few months, which are particularly rough in Utah.
Stray animals face a particularly difficult time during winter. When the temperatures drop, our homeless furry friends are still roaming out in the open while we are sitting warmly and cozily at home.
Philip told, “I saw a Facebook post about a man making them and thought I would give it a try. I made my own post looking for old coolers and it kind of took off.
I do a lot of charity work mostly with children. My wife and I are also animal lovers and I wanted to do something for them.”
So far, Philip has made 77 shelters for stray cats and he also has 15 more coolers to work on. Philip is using the coolers to keep animals warm, which is opposite to what we think that coolers keep things cold.
It would be interesting for you to know that coolers are already insulated to keep things cold, however, these insulations can be used to keep things warm as well. Philip told me that he is the only one making these cat-coolers for his project.
He has also made a video on “How to make cat-coolers” to show people how these are made. Moreover, 2 to 3 cats can easily fit in a cooler of this size.
It is simple to make such a shelter for stray animals near you in your area. You just have to buy some easily available things from your nearest hardware store, along with any discarded cooler.
First, you’d have to drill an entrance hole with a 6-inch drill bit. Then, some three-quarter-inch pipe insulation should be added to line the entrance. Play your part helping animals and keeping them safe and warm in severe winter.
