A man has woken up from coma only to find out that his loyal wife had been nursing him for 20 hours per day for five long years.
“Wife, I love you!” were the first words Li Zhihua said to his wife after waking up from a five-year coma caused by a traffic accident.
As the husband from Xiangyang, China, soon found out, his wife had been by his side taking care of him for 20 hours per day for five years while he was comatose.
57-year-old Zhang Guihuan became the sole carer of her husband and did everything from cleaning and feeding her partner to talking to him and encouraging him to wake up.
“The doctor told me it was possible that he would be in a persistent vegetative state,” she said.
However, the wife refused to accept the harsh diagnosis and remained determined to prove doctors wrong.
For years, she took care of her husband and fed him, sang to him, and played his favorite songs in hopes of improving his condition and helping him wake up.
“These things were very helpful to stimulate his nervous system,” Dr. Wan admitted.
During her 5-year caregiving routine, Zhang had lost over 20 pounds and only slept for three hours per night in order to make herself available to care for her husband.
Fortunately, Mr. Li made a miraculous recovery following the long ordeal.
While he is still in recovery and relearning how to do things such as talking, the two have finally been reunited.
“I have never thought about giving up. As long as he is alive, I will keep serving him,” Zhang added.
