A middle-aged man was found in horrible condition after allegedly being locked up at his mother’s flat for 28 years.
The incident takes place in Stockholm, Sweden, where a 70-year-old mother has been arrested on suspicion of “illegal deprivation of liberty and causing bodily harm” after she held her son captive for nearly three decades.
According to the reports, the 41-year-old man was found by a concerned relative who entered the woman’s apartment after she was hospitalized over an undisclosed medical condition.
Upon entering the flat, the relative came across the woman’s severely malnourished son who allegedly struggled to walk and talk and was missing almost all of his teeth.
While the maltreated son had to undergo surgery at a local hospital, the doctors believe that his condition is not life-threatening.
Following the relative’s discovery, the authorities have launched an investigation and arrested the 41-year-old’s mother.
As Expressen reported, the mother is believed to have kept her son captive ever since she pulled him out of school 28 years ago.
“I hadn’t seen him for over 20 years, but when our eyes met, he whispered my name over and over,” the relative allegedly said.
“I first noticed his legs. They looked horrific. Everything up to his knees were just sores and open wounds. A part of the calf was black and there were puddles of pus underneath him.”
As the relative insisted, her discovery at the flat was “like walking into a horror film,” whereas the apartment allegedly had a horrible smell and was covered in urine and dust.
According to Aftonbladet, sources also informed them that the man’s mother was “overprotective” following a “family accident” that took place decades ago.
While one neighbor recalled seeing the son outside the flat one day while shopping, the majority of neighbors didn’t even know he was living at the apartment due to his mother always avoiding discussions revolving around her son.
After the mother’s arrest, Stockholm Police spokesperson Ola Osterling told AFP that the 41-year-old was “locked up for a very long time” and that he remains in the hospital even though “his injuries are not life-threatening.”
While the spokesperson insisted that “the mother is suspected of illegal deprivation of liberty and causing bodily harm,” the 70-year-old has allegedly denied all allegations.
