The deputy director of the Nippon Medical School Musashi Kosugi Hospital, Kiyoshi Matsuda, told reporters that a 39-year-old man and 12-year-old girl had passed away due to severe injuries.

A bus driver who saw the horrifying incident said that the attacker had been carrying a knife in each hand when he started hitting the children.

A 25-year-old man living nearby, Matsumoto, said he ran outside after hearing screams. He told AFP: “It’s hard to describe what it was like, how it sounded. It wasn’t girls having fun, it was a sound that was absolutely not normal.

“I saw a man lying on the street. I also saw a girl hunched over on the ground. There were also five or six girls, maybe they were the ones who screamed… There was blood all over them.”

A spokesperson for the St. Marianna University School of Medicine said a “woman in her forties and three girls suffered serious injuries.”

The attack came as US President Trump wrapped up his visit to the country and offered his “prayers and sympathy” to the victims.

He said as he stood aboard a Japanese naval destroyer that “all Americans stand with the people of Japan and grieve for the victims and for their families.”

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said: “It is a very harrowing case. I feel strong anger. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the victims and hope the injured recover quickly.”
