A 52-year-old man has passed away after being ‘nearly decapitated’ by a bull during a festival in Spain.

The incident occurred on the last day of the fiestas of Cristo de I’Alcora in Castellon.

Identified as AEL, the victim was just standing near the spectators’ cages which line the route to keep watchers safe.

But the bull lifted the man using its horns and slammed him into the blue railings. People screamed as the terrifying scene unfolded.

The 52-year-old from the nearby town of Vall d’Uixo suffered severe head wounds and a severed artery in his thigh.

He was rushed to the General Hospital of Castellon where he underwent surgery. But because of the severity of his injuries, doctors couldn’t save him.

“I saw it. It was horrific. His head was nearly hanging off. It made my stomach churn,” one onlooker expressed.

Another wrote on social media: “I haven’t seen such an horrendous attack for years. My legs are still shaking.”

The rest of the activities for that day were suspended by the local council which gave ‘sincere condolences to the victim’s family and friends.’

The festival had attracted thousands of visitors and involved 18 bulls.

Animal rights campaigners are calling for a ban on events with the animals, saying ‘this loss of life could have been avoided.’

“No human being should be destroyed by an animal and no animal tortured for the entertainment of a few,” another said.

This isn’t the first time someone has passed away during a bull run. Earlier this month, a 62-year-old received deadly horn blows in the neck and chest during a festival in central Spain.

The victim was just a spectator at the festival and didn’t run in front of the bull when the animals were released.
