People are advised to stay indoors amid coronavirus pandemic to prevent the spread of the deadly infection.
Citizens are only allowed to go out if they are performing necessary tasks like seeing a doctor, buying medicine, shopping for groceries.
To check whether people are only conducting essential tasks, police officers in the UK have been stopping drivers.
But one motorist who was pulled over by police to check what he was doing said his ‘journey is essential’ as he had to ‘buy weed.’
South Wales Police share a photo on their Twitter page and wrote: “The #OpSceptreTeam have been patrolling @SWPCardiff . The vast majority of people listening to @GOVUK advice #StayHomeSavesLives.
“1 man was reported for non essential journey and possession of cannabis, after saying, ‘My journey is essential. I had to buy weed.’”
Since he was already breaking the rules, he probably thought of indulging himself with another crime.
One Twitter user commented: “This is what happens when drug issues have been ignored for years, people become addicted and end up relying on the stuff, next thing we know we’re in lockdown and people will go out to buy it as they see it as essential. Hopefully this lockdown helps cure addictions.”
Another wrote: “The real criminal in this story is the dick who wrapped that weed in fuckin tin foil.”
A third added: “Well I know it illegal here, but states in America (and I think Canada) are literally considering it a essential business and letting the stores stay open.”
The government in the UK recently ordered people to stay indoors to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that ‘police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings.’
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson also said: “A number of neighbourhood patrols have carried out stop checks on vehicles travelling within the county.
“The purpose of these checks is to engage with the public and to explain and reiterate the request from government, ensuring people have considered if their journey is essential.
“The purpose, at this time, is not to enforce the direction set out by the government, but to prepare communities for the new police powers which will be put in place in the coming days.”
