A man from Florida has been arrested for taking the lives of his girlfriend and her newborn child.
49-year-old Jay Leonard Rodriguez has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of a woman and her newborn baby.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, prosecutors filed a motion to have Rodriguez behind bars without bail.
Jessica Gonzales, a witness who tried to save the pregnant woman, was threatened by the assailant.
Gonzales said that she heard the woman’s screams inside a home at 2217 E Emma Street at around 3:30 pm. She told investigators that the couple had been living at the home at that time.
The witness said she entered the home and saw Rodriguez punching the woman who ‘was cowering down to her knees,’ the motion added.
“Ms. Gonzalez told the defendant to stop hitting her, but the defendant then balled up his fist and turned toward the witness,” the motion continued. “The defendant threatened Ms. Gonzalez with physical violence if she tried to get involved.”
Ms. Gonzales also said that Rodriguez kicked the woman several times in the stomach and face.
The motion added that Rodriguez continued beating her even though she already lost consciousness.
Ms. Gonzales immediately called 911 and she rushed to help the woman as soon as Rodriguez left. Tampa police arrived at the scene and found the woman unconscious and ‘severely bruised and swollen around her head.’
She was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital where doctors delivered her baby.
But only ten minutes later, she passed away and her baby girl also died ten minutes after that.
