39-year-old Kendrick Akins from Texas was arrested for shooting his fiancée only days after he proposed to her.
Akins was brought into custody hours after he was questioned at a police station in Houston.
According to investigators, Akins shot 33-year-old Dominic Jefferson in the parking lot near her apartment after having an argument.
One of the neighbors overheard them arguing and went outside to help Jefferson, officers said to the Houston Chronicle.
The 39-year-old allegedly shot the neighbor but missed.
Cops arrived at the scene and discovered Jefferson’s body on the ground beside a vehicle with its door open.
According to the Chronicle, Akins had already run away by the time the police arrived. He then went to a police station to talk to investigators.
The victim’s sister, Charmone Onyeije, said to KHOU-TV: “Nobody deserves to die like that. I’m not going to let her die in vain, but I am going to celebrate her life as we know it.”
According to Jefferson’s family, the couple had only been together for three months. They had never heard of issues in their relationship during those months, KHOU-TV reported.
Officers said they are checking for CCTV footages from the area.
Akins even live-streamed his proposal to the 33-year-old on New Year’s Eve. In the video, Akins wore a white t-shirt with the words ‘Dominic will you marry me?’ on its front. Jefferson had a blindfold and was on a couch when Akins revealed an engagement ring.
“Happy new years to us 2020 it’s up there,” Jefferson wrote in a post.
She also shared photos and wrote: “I just feel like crying God I never new [sic] I would be happy and getting married soon to some one who loves me for me all me my crazy my good and my bad and my pasts.”
