Try thinking about a doomsday bunker.
Perhaps you get an image of a concrete vault, not unlike those visualized in video games such as the Fallout series. Maybe a basement like room with infinite shelves of canned food. But you probably weren’t imagining something like this:
Or how about something like this, that looks less like a bunker and more like a holiday resort:
While unimaginable for the vast majority of people, the 1% billionaires have been showing increased interest for these luxurious bunkers. Whether it be pandemics or a nuclear war, these bunkers are designed to withstand any major dangers one can think of.
There are companies such as Vivos specialize in providing these bunkers for the very rich. They come in different sizes and styles: some prefer a more discrete, personal area reserved for their family and close friends. Others desire a more communal environment.
In those cases, these companies acquire massive building that have been abandoned and renovate them. Former missile silos, both in the US and Russia, are popular buildings. As they have been decommissioned, governments are more than willing to get them off their hands.
This is especially true as many of those facilities are located in rural areas where the local government is always short on money. Thus, without having to spend millions of dollars trying to construct a large-scale building, companies such as Vivos can acquire a big space for virtually no fees.
One such example is the Vivos xPoint. Located in South Dakota, it had been used by the US Army to store ammunitions until the late 60s. Now, the 575 bunkers have been redesigned into what the company calls “the largest survival community on Earth”.
According to official statements, these bunkers come prepared with a food supply for over a year. Gardens that require little to no water are operated for a sustainable supply of fresh produce. Its walls are built to withstand anything from an earthquake to a nuclear blast.
According to the CEO of Vivos, Robert Vicino, their sales soared before and after the 2016 US Presidential elections. It seems that there were no party lines when it came to luxurious bunkers as according to Vicino, both liberals and conservative billionaires inquired for these bunkers.
The novel coronavirus outbreak also seems to have piqued interest in these facilities. Vicino stated that spaces in the communal bunkers have been fully sold out in the previous weeks.
