Forrest Gump was a fictional character in a movie but one of his quotes about life is still true.
“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” It’s one of his most famous lines in the movie.
And that saying comes to mind in the case of a man who is only known by his Twitter username: @marcy_com. Let’s call him Marcy for convenience.
One day, Marcy was on National Route 275 and had no idea of the rare find he was about to make. That’s when he happened upon a cute puppy beside the road who was all by herself. The pup appeared too young to care for herself so he took her in and called her Luna. Thinking that she was just another lost pup, Marcy decided to try looking for her owners on social media even as he prepared to care for her himself.
As soon as he started sharing pics of Luna and asking if anyone knew her owners, he got the surprise of his life. A lot of the comments mentioned that they didn’t know who Luna’s owners were but they were consistent in noting how cute Luna was.
However, a few people started commenting on her unusual looks. When he posted a video of her adorably barking, someone replied, “Uh, that’s a cute… puppy?”
Others remarked on her similarity in looks to a tanuki, a raccoon dog, in Japanese. But as time went on, a few began to suspect that Luna might be, as it turns out, a fox cub. As the “duh” moment dawned on Marcy, he realized why no one knew who Luna’s owners were because she was a wild fox cub!
Trivia time. The Japanese word for fox is kitsune.
In any case, Marcy knew he had to give Luna up no matter how cute she may be. It’s illegal in Japan to own foxes as pets because they can carry dangerous parasites that can be passed on to humans. But Marcy wasn’t about to chuck her into the wild so he started looking for places that can properly care for her.
Luckily, he found North Fox Farm in Kitami, a town in Hokkaido. Experts there determined that Luna was about 1 to 2 months old. Since she’s too young to hunt for herself, they will nurse her until she’s strong enough to go back into the wild.
Apparently, visiting the Kitakitsune Farm awakened Marcy’s interest in foxes and he has tweeted a lot about the foxes there. With Luna’s budding online popularity, North Fox Farm has actually teased a photo session featuring her and we may see one soon!
