K. will be looking at various scenarios for lifting strict measures in the coming weeks but a few rules will still be required for a long period to come. Brits should not expect to return back to their normal lives in 2020.
Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer noted that doing so is important for a long time so that the transmission rate does not grow because the virus could start spreading again.
To warn the public about what may come, he said that it was completely unrealistic to believe a return to normal lives would be possible anytime soon at a Downing Street press conference.
This comes after scientists have warned about a second wave of the disease that could come in winters this year.
There would be a series of choices as well as ministers would decide a set of measures to ease some rules. However, the transmission rate should not go up again as the coronavirus cases could explode.
Chris noted that the only way to exit from the coronavirus lockdown would be drugs or vaccines to treat the disease. He added that the chances of that occurring in next calendar year are very small even though the first human vaccines begin tomorrow.
He further added that in the long run, the only exit from this disease would be a highly effective vaccine or a highly effective drug that would save people from dying due to the disease or could prevent vulnerable people from contracting the disease.
Chris announced that the country should be realistic about it. He added that they would have to rely on the social measures and that, controlling the disease would take a long time.
This means that there is a possibility you would not be able to celebrate Christmas with your loved ones, and specifically protecting the elderly population might be in the long term measures.
