Little boys were photographed while wearing princess outfits as a part of a campaign aiming to break gender stereotypes surrounding young children and traditional parenting methods.
Kitty Wolf is a photographer from Chicago who believes that all children should be allowed to express themselves through whatever clothes they like.
“I have seen boys being told that princesses are ‘just for girls’ or that liking princesses and especially dressing as one somehow makes them weak, inferior or not boys,” Wolf explained on her website.
“They’re told it’s not manly, or macho, or normal. This leads boys to feel ashamed of their interests, confused, sad, and lonely.”
As the photographer insists, children’s “imagination should not be limited by their gender,” and boys should be allowed to wear dresses if that is what makes them happy.
“Putting on a princess dress doesn’t make a boy a girl any more than putting on a shell makes them a real ninja turtle,” Wolf says.
“When I say ‘can be a princess,’ I mean they can be a princess when they play the same way they can be a superhero when they play, even though neither is literally possible by definition. I simply feel that a child’s imagination should not be limited by their gender.”
Wolf’s campaign is a part of her project called Boys Can Be Princesses Too. In her photoshoots, the photographer captured a series of moments in which proud little boys are seen posing in dresses alongside professional performers.
After the photos went viral, many people praised the photographer for challenging the norm and breaking gender stereotypes that are imposed on children from a young age.
