Kyle Rittenhouse has been cleared of the remaining FIVE charges in the Kenosha murder case.
After four days of deliberation, the jury in the Kenosha shooter trial reached a decision on Friday. If found guilty of the most serious accusation against him, Rittenhouse, 18, could have faced life in prison.
On August 25, 2020, Rittenhouse, 18, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide and other counts after killing Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and injuring Gaige Grosskreutz.
Demonstrators have been standing outside the Kenosha Courthouse for the past few days, while Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers dispatched 500 troops of the Wisconsin National Guard to quell the predicted protests.
Judge Schroeder rejected two of the six original charges before they went to the jury, first a curfew violation count and then the one charge that seemed like a slam-dunk for the prosecution: possession of a deadly weapon by a person under the age of 18.
The state failed to comply with the whole regulation, which in Wisconsin requires not only that the person be under the age of 18 but also that the weapon be short-barreled, which Rittenhouse’s AR-15 was not.
Judge Schroeder said that “I don’t know about you guys, but I watch a little TV, in the morning, in the evening. And some of the greatest legal minds in the country, I’m delighted to say, agree with us that the instructions are very confusing.”
When Rittenhouse went to Kenosha, he was a 17-year-old former police youth cadet, and he said he was there to safeguard property after rioters lit fires and looted businesses the night before.
The case has revealed fundamental divisions among Americans in the United States about guns, racial injustice, vigilantism, and self-defense.
