The 17-year-old teen charged with shooting two protesters dead and injuring another in Kenosha is fighting his extradition from Illinois to Wisconsin.
Kyle Rittenhouse’s lawyer, John Pierce, said to the judge during an online court hearing in Illinois that he planned to fight the request by prosecutors in Kenosha that the teen be transferred to Wisconsin to face charges.
The 17-year-old is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the killing of two protesters in Kenosha and attempted intentional homicide in the injuring of another person.
In addition, Rittenhouse faces a misdemeanor charge of underage firearm possession for using a semi-automatic rifle.
If convicted, he faces a mandatory life in prison sentence.
The teen’s attorneys have insisted that he acted in self-defense and have described him as a brave patriot who was exercising his right to bear arms amid violent protests over Jacob Blake’s shooting.
Rittenhouse was wearing a black shit and a gray mask as he participated in the hearing via video link.
Judge Paul Novak gave two weeks for the defense to review papers and file pleadings.
Pierce then asked for a month to prepare arguments fighting extradition that he said involve ‘issues of some complexity, frankly that have not arisen in the country for some time.’
He added: “We intend to challenge extradition by writ of habeas corpus.”
The judge granted only two weeks to prepare their arguments.
