She was loved by countless children throughout her long career in the Perham School District of Minnesota. She was an amazing teacher with a heart of gold. By the time she retired in 1989, she had seen thousands of faces — and could remember every single one.

To celebrate her retirement, Mrs. Schik and her husband planned to take a trip across the country. But before they could hit the road, her husband died unexpectedly. At age 90, she had to make the tough decision to move into an assisted living complex. She had never considered what life without her soulmate would look like, and as you can imagine, it was not easy. Life was suddenly very much different from anything she’d pictured for herself after retirement.
