An Oklahoma couple decided to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary by going on vacation.
But the pregnant wife’s water broke too early in the middle of the trip and then the coronavirus lockdown was suddenly put in place. But this difficult situation had a ray of hope in the form of their Uber driver who has been helping them during these trying times.
Andrew and Suzanne Boyd were planning to go on a cruise to the Bahamas during the week of March 16 but was thrown out the window due to the COVID-19 scare. So they took a drive to Florida along with their three children, daughters Betsy, 6, and Brooklyn, 4, and son Blake, 2, for some fun at the beach. But on their first evening, Suzanne, who was 23 weeks pregnant, found out her water had broken.
“I was very scared. I thought the baby was coming that night and at 23 weeks, that was terrifying,” Suzanne, 31, recalls. “I didn’t know what to do logistically since our three kids were asleep and we had one car. I was devastated to go to the hospital alone and potentially deliver a baby that wouldn’t live.”
Andrew left their children with a friend who lived nearby and used his friend’s car and met up with Suzanne at the hospital. Doctors then told the couple that Suzanne would need to stay in the hospital until at least June.
Left with no choice, Andrew and Suzanne had their kids picked up by his parents in Kansas City where the kids would stay in the meantime. In Florida, Andrew kept using Uber for errands and it was one of the best decisions he had made.
On March 31, Andrew took an Uber to a laundromat and struck up a conversation with his driver, Kristin. He told Kristin his situation and the story just stood out to her.
“This young man was so impressive, showing such grace under pressure. He never complained or sounded negative,” she said. “He was just very matter-of-fact about their situation.”
After she dropped him off, she told Andrew she’d pick him up for free after he was done. But she did more than that. She came back with loads of supplies and toiletries for the couple and even offered to buy them a meal at Arby’s.
“I was blown away that she would sacrifice hours of her day for someone she had known for less than 10 minutes,” Andrew recalls. “When I found out that she had also gone to the store and bought us bags of essential items, I was speechless. I couldn’t stop smiling.”
“It is by far the nicest thing any stranger has ever done for me,” he adds. “This came at a time in our lives when we really needed a pick-me-up.”
But it was really a no-brainer for Kristin.
“They are in a tiny room in a hospital where they know no one, and their family and friends are halfway across the country,” she explains. “His parents are taking care of their babies, so I thought his parents should know someone is taking care of their baby.”
Kristin has followed through with her kindness, making several food drops for the couple and even brought envelopes, stamps, and cards so they could write to their children.
Suzanne started documenting Kristin’s drop-offs on her TikTok account and they’ve gone viral with millions of likes along with thousands of comments.
“It has meant the world,” Andrew says of Kristin’s gestures. “Living in this hospital away from our other children has been physically and mentally challenging. Kristin’s kindness and generosity have lifted our spirits, kept us smiling, and provided us with some much-needed breaks from hospital food.”
“All of her gifts have been so thoughtful, but [one with the envelopes, stamps, and cards] stands out the most,” he adds. “It’s very hard being away from [our kids], but this allows us to remain connected in a fun way.”
