After vicious calls from the protestors in the streets, Wisconsin’s Department of Justice has identified the police officer who fired live rounds in to the back of Jacob Blake in Kenosha.
The officer was 29 year old Rusten Sheskey, who has been part of the department for 7 years.
The confrontation that has since spurred another major round of protests in the streets began on Sunday, when a woman called the police department saying that her boyfriend showed up to her place despite her objection to it.
The tragedy began when the police tried to arrest Blake. Although the exact situation and order of events is not yet clear, Blake verbally told officers that he was carrying a knife in the car. Refusing to comply to the police’s orders, Blake continued walking around the van.
As the victim reached to his driver seat door, Sheskey stopped the individual by getting a hold of his shirt. Seven rounds were fired to his back. Throughout this whole process, Blake’s 3 children were allegedly in the car and witnessed the whole thing. Blake was also tased at one point.
All of the officers who were present for the arrest has been placed on administrative leave as the case and procedure is being thoroughly examined. The names of the other officers have not yet been released as of this writing.
As seen in the first picture of this article, Sheskey was once a member of the Kenosha Police Department’s bicycle unit. In an interview with the local press back in August 2019, Sheskey had shared with the reporter which aspects of his job he enjoys the most.
In what has become an ironic statement since the incident, the officer said that being able to help someone on what may be their worst days and make it a little brighter is his favorite part of the job description. He said he knew the trust that the public has on the police force as well.
According to his online resume, Sheskey was also stationed at University of Wisconsin, Riverside which is also his alma mater. The only trackable offense linked to Sheskey was a traffic accident back in 2015.
