A group of kayakers escaped the jaws of death when an open-mouthed shark came within their reaching distance off the coast off the Island of Man.
37-year-old Jennifer Kneale was just finishing up her day at her sailing school, the 7th Wave when she got the information regarding the sighting of a shark in Port Erin Bay.
Instead of heading back to safety, she and her team of sailing instructors hopped into their kayaks and headed towards the place to witness the rare treat.
The awe-inspiring moment for Jen and her team lasted for two hours. She filmed the shark swimming open-mouthed and its smoothly pointed fin slashed outside the water causing the waves to rock the surrounding kayaks. The crowd of paddleboarders and boaters, which included children, kept on looking with amazement while keeping a fair distance as they didn’t want to scare off the creature.
Jen said that instead of heading back, she and her team took their kayaks out for an enjoyable treat. She said that they assembled a small fleet in the bay and headed towards the shark to try and spot him.
As per Jen, it was probably the favored feeding spot for the shark as it was rich in plankton. However, the shark didn’t seem concerned by the armada of small boats and crafts. In fact, the shark made frequent close passes by.
Later, it was found out that it was a Basking Shark that is relatively harmless to humans. Jen said that everyone out there who witnessed the shark followed the Basking Shark Code of Conduct, which recommends the boats and other floating vessels to keep still while around sharks.
Well, it was truly a breathtaking moment for Jen and her team. Basking sharks are considered to be the second largest fish in the world.
