Kamala Harris has been accused of plagiarizing Martin Luther King Jr’s anecdote in one of her interviews.

The Vice President-Elect has been facing backlash on Twitter after eagle-eyed netizens noticed similarities between one of her stories and an anecdote shared by civil rights movement leader MLK.

In the story she shared during an interview with Elle magazine back in October, Harris recalled how she was allegedly in a stroller when her family attended a civil rights march back when she was still a child.

According to the VP-Elect, she eventually fell out of the stroller, whereas her family continued to march on due to being “caught up in the rapture of protest.”

After her parents realized what had happened, they returned to pick up Kamala only to find her upset. Her mother then allegedly asked her what she wanted and what she needed to which Kamala responded by saying: “Fweedom.”

“My mother tells the story about how I’m fussing. And she’s like, ‘Baby, what do you want? What do you need?’ And I just looked at her and I said, ‘Fweedom,’” Harris recalled in the interview with Elle.

Shortly after her story went viral, however, people couldn’t help but notice its resemblance to the anecdote shared by MLK decades ago.

“I never will forget a moment in Birmingham when a white policeman accosted a little Negro girl, seven or eight years old, who was walking in a demonstration with her mother,” King said in an interview with Alex Haley which was published in the Playboy magazine.

“‘What do you want?’ the policeman asked her gruffly, and the little girl looked him straight in the eye and answered, ‘Fee-dom.’

“She couldn’t even pronounce it, but she knew. It was beautiful! Many times when I have been in sorely trying situations, the memory of that little one has come into my mind, and has buoyed me.”

After the uncanny resemblance between the two stories came to light, some Twitter users accused Harris of “plagiarizing” the anecdote originally told by King. Others appeared to take aim at the incoming vice president by incorporating her name and photos in hilarious memes.
