Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has passed away at the age of 87 following a battle with metastatic pancreas cancer.
The Associate Justice’s death has been confirmed by the Supreme Court in a statement claiming that the 87-year-old was surrounded by her family as she passed away at her Washington, DC home.
Ginsburg, who served as an Associate Justice at the Supreme Court for 27 years, is the second woman in history to serve as a Justice on the highest court in the country.
“Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died this evening surrounded by her family at her home in Washington, D.C., due to complications of metastatic pancreas cancer. She was 87 years old,” the official statement of the Supreme Court read.
“Justice Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Clinton in 1993. She was the second woman appointed to the Court and served more than 27 years.”
As the statement goes on to elaborate, Ginsburg is survived by her two children, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
In the release, the Supreme Court also presented the statement of Chief Justice John G. Roberts who said:
“Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague.
“Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her — a tireless and resolute champion of justice.”
Ginsburg’s death follows months after she had surprised the public as she announced she was undergoing chemotherapy.
According to her final wish, which was presented in the statement she dictated to her granddaughter in her final days, Ginsburg requested to “not be replaced until a new president is installed.”
As per the Supreme Court statement, “a private interment service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.”
