In 2018, Boulder passed a ban on the sale and possession of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.

The city passed its two ordinances in the wake of the Parkland shooting, which left 17 people dead at Marjorie Stoneman High School in Florida.

According to the Denver Post, the ban applied to semi-automatic rifles with pistol grips, certain pistols, a telescoping or folding stock, or any protruding grip that lets a weapon be stabilized with the non-trigger hand.

Large capacity magazines were described as “any ammunition-feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.”

The city made a permit system to let anyone keep a weapon on the banned list if they already acquired or owned it before the ordinances.

But on March 12 this year, Judge Andrey Hartman ruled that the 2018 bans violated a 2003 state law prohibiting municipalities from enacting their own firearms regulations and blocked the city fro, enforcing the ban.

His ruling was praised by the National Rifle Association on March 16, tweeting it “gave law-abiding gun owners something to celebrate.”

Only six days later, the city was rocked by a mass shooting after a 21-year-old gunman opened fire at a supermarket, leaving ten people dead.
