A 26-year-old man’s lung collapsed after he went for a run for two and a half miles while wearing a face mask.
The Chinese man, known as Zhang Ping, was taken to the Wuhan Central Hospital after he started experiencing serious chest pain.
Medics found that his left lung shrunk by 90 percent and believed it occurred due to the high pressure in his organ because he carried out intense exercising while using a face mask.
The 26-year-old is now in stable condition after an operation.
According to the Wuhan Central Hospital, Mr. Zhang started jogging to improve his fitness after their hometown had been under lockdown for over two months. He first jogged for 1.86 miles (3km) a day but increased the distance to 3.73 miles (6km).
The 26-year-old said he wore a face mask during his workout despite occasionally feeling uncomfortable and suffocating as other joggers also have face masks.
But after running for 2.5 miles, he started feeling slight chest pain. He continued to run but eventually gave up and walked home. He was later taken to hospital after experiencing severe chest pain.
According to the hospital, his life could’ve been in ‘life-threatening danger if he was brought in a bit later.’
Pneumothorax or a collapsed lung usually occurs when the lung is punctured and air escapes into the chest cavity.
A lung can collapse without any direct injury to the chest or lung. This is called a spontaneous pneumothorax, and would usually result in air-filled sacs to form. When one of the sacs, called blebs, bursts, the air is released into the pleural cavity and causes the lung to collapse.
Dr. Chen Baojun warned that people should avoid wearing face mask or any other face coverings while exercising as it could obstruct the circulation of oxygen.
