Joe Biden has lashed out at Republicans who failed to wear face masks while sheltering in the Capitol during the insurrection.
As the incoming president insisted in his Friday speech, “at least four members of Congress” have contracted coronavirus as a result of being forced to shelter in a safe room with GOP members who refused to wear face masks while the Capitol was under siege.
Taking aim at the Republican lawmakers, Biden said it is “time to grow up” and stop viewing face masks as a political issue.
“Quite frankly, it was shocking to see members of Congress, while the Capitol was under siege by a deadly mob of thugs, refusing to wear a mask while they were in secure locations,” the president-elect said.
“I’m so proud of my congresswoman right here in the state of Delaware, Lisa Blunt Rochester, trying to hand out masks while people were lying on the floor, huddled up. And Republican colleagues refusing to put them on. What the hell’s the matter with them? It’s time to grow up.”
While Biden acknowledged that mask-wearing has become a partisan issue, he claimed that at least four congressmen and congresswomen contracting the virus because of it was “a stupid, stupid thing to happen.”
“For God’s sake. Wear a mask — if not for yourself, for your loved ones. For your country,” Biden urged.
While it is not clear to us if any of the Republican representatives who refused to wear a mask in Capitol has or had coronavirus, Biden appears to have blamed them for infections of four Democrats including Bonnie Watson Coleman, Pramila Jayapal, Adriano Espaillat, and Brad Schneider.
