Joseph Biden Jr has achieved victory after securing enough electoral votes to become the next president of the United States.
Biden, who turns 78 this month, was elected the 46th president of the United States and will give his victory speech on Saturday night in Wilmington.
He released his first statement and promised to help people reduce the temperature after more than four years of divisive politics.
President-elect Biden said in a statement: “I am honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in Vice President-elect Harris.
“With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation.
“It’s time for America to unite. And to heal.
“We are the United States of America. And there’s nothing we can’t do, if we do it together.”
Biden also shared the same sentiment on Twitter, writing: “America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country.
“The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans – whether you voted for me or not.
“I will keep the faith that you have placed in me.”
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris becomes the first woman of color to become vice president.
Only minutes after the announcement, cars could be heard honking in celebration.
Harris was working out in running clothes when the race was called. “We did it, we did it Joe,” she expressed. “You’re going to be the next president of the United States.”
Jen O’Malley Dillon, Biden’s campaign manager, was also seen by reporters in the Westin lobby. “Ecstatic! A great day for this country,” she said.
