When their pet cat gave birth to 6 beautiful kittens, owner BJ King and their family were not expecting that one kitten will be twice as cute compared to their siblings in quite a literal way.
Names Biscuits and Gravy, this kitten has two faces. They have twice as many of everything – four eyes, four ears, two noses and two mouths. All their siblings and the mother cat have all been reported to be safe and healthy after giving birth.
While rare, kitten being born with two faces is not unheard of. They are often called ‘Janus cats’, named after the Roman god. Janus is well known for having two faces facing opposite directions – one looking back into the past and another looking forward into the future.
Unlike the deity that they are named after, the kitten’s two heads face in more or less the same direction. However, many of them do not survive for long after their birth because of the many health complications that follow as their tiny body tries to sustain two heads.
However, there have been rare cases in which these two-headed cats live well beyond a few days. The world record holders for longevity is Frank and Louie, pictured above, who managed to survive 15 years. They have appeared in the Guinness World Record.
King and his family said that they will do everything they can to make sure Biscuits and Gravy get the fighting chance they need to give it a go on having a life. They said they will take care of the kitten instead of its mother, including feeding and keeping the kitten warm.
King said that it was like having a newborn baby. Not only are the owners standing night watch to feed the kitten every two hours for 24 hours, but they are also allowing the kitten to snuggle so that it doesn’t feel too cold.
The family vet for the Kings said that Biscuits and Gravy seemed healthy despite its condition. Although it only has one brain, each of the mouths and faces can operate separately.
The Kings said that while they will give away the rest of the siblings, they will take this rare and doubly precious kitten as a member of their family, and vowed to give it all the love and attention it deserves.
