Britney Spears’ father faces FBI probe after it was claimed that he hired a security company to monitor the singer’s communications, including what was happening in her bedroom.
The FBI is now investigating into whether the law was broken but Jamie Spears insisted that his daughter was aware of the surveillance arrangements, the Deadline reported.
The popstar’s lawyers said the claims are further evidence as to why the conservatorship should be ended immediately.
Britney’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart said that “Mr. Spears has crossed unfathomable lines.”
“While they are not evidence, the allegations warrant serious investigation, certainly by Ms. Spears as, among other things, California is a ‘two-party’ consent state,” he added.
His remarks were a reference to a New York Times documentary detailing the surveillance claims.
Under Californian law, wiretapping is a ‘two-party consent’ and it is a crime to record or eavesdrop on any confidential communication, including a telephone call or a private conversation, without the consent of all parties to the conversation.
Speaking to the New York Times in the new documentary, Alex Vlasov, a former employee of Black Box Security, said that Spears’ messages and phone calls were secretly recorded as part of her conservatorship.
Rosengart said the claims warranted urgent investigation. “Placing a listening device in Britney’s bedroom would be particularly inexcusable and disgraceful, and corroborates so much of her compelling, poignant testimony.
“These actions must be fully and aggressively investigated.”
It is not clear whether the court which managed the 13-year conservatorship had approved the recordings.
Britney Spears took to Instagram and said that the documentary, Controlling Britney Spears, had many factual errors.
“I watched a little bit of the last documentary and I hate to inform you but a lot of what you heard is not true!!!” she wrote.
But Vlasov, who worked for the security company for 8 years, insisted that the singer was subjected to invasive surveillance.
Vlasov said he quit when Britney told the court that she hadn’t consented to the control.
“It really reminded me of somebody that was in prison,” he said. “And security was put in a position to be the prison guards essentially.”
