Although I try to adopt older dogs, sadly most people do not and as a dog gets older their chances of finding a forever home shrink.
Puppies are just way more popular among those looking to adopt. If you’ve ever spent any time at a shelter, you will know there are people who only want a puppy for their family. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a puppy, but it means that a lot of older dogs are passed over. Older dogs are often seen as harder to train and you won’t be able to spend as much time with them.
It’s sadly a common train of thought and because of it, most people prefer a puppy or a dog less than a year old.
As someone who has met their fair share of older dogs, these animals are will love your family and are willing to learn a ton. Especially for a slower paced family, an older dog can be perfect because they’re less excitable, more mature, and relaxed.
In the video below we see the common phrase “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” proven completely wrong! It just takes a certain amount of love and care.
Meet Jackson, a 3-year-old golden retriever who was just adopted by his new owner not even a month before the video was recorded. His owner quickly taught him an impressive neat trick! I’ve never seen such an impressive skill and restraint in a dog before! You will be utterly amazed by it.
What do you think? Are older dogs able to be taught new tricks? Have you taught your own dog some really neat tricks?
