Maxime Mbanda, an Italian flanker, has swapped rugby to drive an ambulance 13 hours a day with a hope to help his nation’s battle against coronavirus.
Because rugby fixtures have been cancelled for an indefinite time all over the world in recent weeks after the spread of Covid-19, Mbanda was left with a lot of time on his hands.
Hospitals in Italy have been overwhelmed with patients and an increasing death toll, which made Maxime Mbanda decided that it was time to help the ailing healthcare system of his nation.
He said that when everything got cancelled in rugby, he wondered how he could be of help without any medical experience.
Then he admitted to having been serving from 8 days for 12-13 hours a day, without any leave. He noted that seeing the conditions in infectious disease rooms motivates him to keep going on without getting tired.
He said that fear is normal, however, there are some things that can be performed safely, which would offer those on front lines a rest for half to one hour. And for them, even an hour’s rest is crucial as they are working for a minimum of twenty hours shifts.
He expressed that as long as he is healthy as strong, he will keep going on, and will stay for as long as required.
Mbanda admitted to transferring patients with coronavirus disease from one hospital to another, helping with the stretcher or wheelchair, and holding oxygen.
The 27-year-old described horrific conditions and fear, suffering, and pain in the eyes of affected.
He noted that one of the patients whom he collected from a hospital told him that he witnessed three deaths within three hours of patients lying near him. He added that if people saw what he saw in the hospitals, they would not dare to step out of their homes.
