A 39-year Old Brain Haemorrhage Survivor Completes Ironman Challenge


Paul Spence, 39, from east Yorkshire had suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2012 and was admitted to the Royal Hull Infirmary’s intensive care unit.

Gradually, he recovered and was discharged but he was determined to lead a normal life when doctor’s had lost hope in his situation after the hospital stay. However, after training himself, he participated in the grueling Ironman Challenge.

He swam for 2.4 miles, cycled 112 miles, and ran a full marathon to come 556th out of 1612 competitors. Paul always believed that his brain can help him accomplish his goals and therefore, he always tried to nourish his brains with the best available food.

He has been associated with many initiatives – Paul is an avid health freak and is an ambassador for the injury firm, Hudgell Solicitors where he provides support to injured people along with their families.

He has also started his own charity, ‘PAUL for Brain Recovery’ within three years of the accident and has a community-based brain recovery center in Hull.

Health bodies have hailed the center for their wonderful support sessions, emphasis on healthy eating, and lifestyle choices. Paul has also ventured into a business after training himself with a nutritionist for the kind of food that can be beneficial for the brain.

He has launched a range of brain-boosting food choices under the banner of ‘Brainworks’. The product is available at all leading supermarkets and has been endorsed by the celebrated footballer, Liam Cooper, and rugby player, Jamie Peacock.

Paul donates 50 percent to Daren Smith – Paul has participated in more than 20 marathons and has completed cycling for 1,500 miles, 390 miles of running, and 1,400 miles of walking since the beginning of the year. Further, through the Ironman challenge,

He is fundraising more amounts so that they can be used for people with brain disabilities. He has also pledged to donate 50 percent to Daren Smith of Hull who is suffering paralysis due to stroke since the last two years.

Daren was a cycling enthusiast and with the help of ‘PAUL for Barin recovery’, he is receiving specialist physiotherapy sessions so that he can paddle again.

Paul has done a lot for the community and aims to do more for them so that people with brain disability can be helped so that they can also lead a normal life.
