The Iranian President expressed his thoughts about the US election as he suggested he was happy that Trump is leaving office.
Referring to President Trump as “the most lawless U.S. president,” Hassan Rouhani suggested that Trump’s election defeat was in the best interest of Iran as he accused the US President of being a “lawless terrorist.”
President Rouhani’s speech followed months after Trump had ordered the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, a top-ranking Iranian general, and a month after Trump was talked out of his plans to strike Iran to stop the country’s growing nuclear program.
While Rouhani admitted Iran was not “overjoyed” by Biden either, the president made it clear that they were “happy” about Trump’s reign coming to an end.
“We are not overjoyed about Mr. Biden’s arrival, but we are happy about Trump leaving,” the Iranian President said before calling Trump a “terrorist” and “the most lawless U.S. president.”
Rouhani’s speech comes shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to Joe Biden just hours after the US President-Elect’s win was made official.
Shortly after the Electoral College confirmed that Biden had won the election with 306 votes, Putin, one of the last leaders yet to congratulate Biden, offered his congratulations.
According to the reports, Putin “wished the President-Elect every success” as he suggested he was ready for the beginning of the “interaction and contact.”
The Russian President also went on to express confidence that the two superpowers “which have a special responsibility for global security and stability, could, despite their differences, really help to solve the many problems and challenges facing the world”.
Putin also appeared to defend the President-Elect’s son, Hunter Biden, against criticism the businessman has been facing due to his business dealings in Ukraine and Russia.
