Army investigators have finally identified the human remains discovered in a shallow grave last week as those belonging to 20-year-old Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen, her devastated family confirmed.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Guillen’s family said that the remains found by a group of 30 volunteers belong to their loved one, who was last seen alive at the Texas Army base on April 22 after telling her family she was sexually assaulted by a sergeant and felt unsafe.
One suspect has been arrested but the key suspect identified as Spc Aaron David Robinson took his own life hours after the remains were found.
According to reports, Robinson left his post and shot himself when investigators caught up with him. 22-year-old Cecily Aguilar, an estranged wife of another soldier, was arrested for allegedly helping Robinson dispose of the body.
If convicted, Aguilar could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Natalie Khawam, the lawyer for Guillen’s family, say the 20-year-old was murdered with a hammer before her body was dismembered and buried in a shallow grave.
She claimed Guillen was working in the armory with Robinson when the suspect was told he was going to be reported. The man grabbed a weapon and started ‘bludgeoning her head over and over.’
Khawam alleges the suspects tried to burn the young woman before using a machete to dismember her. The remains were severely damaged that medical officials couldn’t use her skull or face for bone recognition.
Tim Miller of Texas EquuSearch, who helped in the search for the young woman, said the remains were found only after a man noticed a foul smell.
He told KHOU: “It appears he buried her, put lime on her, mixed up concrete, put that over her, put dirt over her, rocks and stuff.”
